Kniphofia ‘Papaya Popsicle’

Picture from work. Nice colours on this variety. Not ad nice in the picture ad in real life. It’s too bad the leaves always look so terrible on these because the flowers are so cool.

In slightly related news my mystery Aloe should be open soon. The flowers look at this point much like the buds on my Haworthia but with some orange colour to them. Maybe it’ll be open by Bloom Day? Should have an Echeveria open by then too.

I also managed to get all my perennials (including my Rhododendron) and bulbs planted today and most “tropicals” brought inside for yet another frost warning tonight.

  1. I adore kniphofias but I have never been able to make them work in my family's garden in Michigan, even with elaborate mulching and the like…

This one was only saying hardy to zone 6. I have seen some fairly mature clumps in Waterloo Ontario but if I remember right they were in bed that was raised, mounded fairly high which should give some really good drainage. The other thing Waterloo has going for it is very reliable snow cover. I would guess drainage was the big thing though that helped it winter there.

Love the flowers, not so excited about the foliage. Kniphofia northiae “Octopus Red-Hot Poker” looks like it might have some kind of cool foliage.

  4. Andrew says:

Wow that Kniphofia northiae is pretty sweet. Only hardy to zone 6-ish (or warmer by some accounts – Dave's Garden suggests zone 7) but totally sweet otherwise.

Not that I've really been deterred by a plant only being hardy to zone 7 before. If my banana works out this winter maybe I'll look into it…
